Symptoms of Infestation

Yellowing and discoloration of parts from which sap is extracted (leaflets, fronds branches, floral stalks).

Weakening and death of infested trees when infestations recur over several years.

Severely infested trees often fail to bear fruit in the following season.

Reduced fruit size and failure to reach maturity in severe infestations.

Decreased market value of fruits produced by heavily infested trees.

Death of oviposition sites and surrounding tissue.

Reduced fruit set when flowering coincides with periods of pest activity.

Presence of honeydew covering infested palm fronds and underlying surfaces, which promotes the spread of fungal diseases.

Prevention and Control Mechanism

Agricultural Practices: Several agricultural practices contribute to reducing the damage caused by one or more agricultural pests when implemented correctly and at appropriate times. The selection of suitable practices is based on studying the pest’s behavior, life cycle, and identifying its primary and secondary hosts in infested areas. Damage caused by the dubas bug on palms can be mitigated by applying the following agricultural practices:

Planting trees at adequate spacing.
Regulating irrigation and fertilization.
Removing weeds.
Removing offshoots surrounding mother palms.
Disposing of infested fronds.
Biological Control of the Dubas Bug.

Numerous natural predators of the dubas bug have been recorded in various regions around the world. The most notable include aphid lions, ladybird beetles, praying mantises, along with many parasitoids and pathogens that eliminate a significant proportion of adults, nymphs, and eggs. These agents can be utilized effectively within integrated pest management programs

Chemical Control of the Dubas Bug.

Chemical insecticides remain an essential component of dubas bug control programs. Treatments should be timed to coincide with specific periods of the year when the pest is active, particularly after egg hatching. A variety of insecticides may be used to reduce pest populations.
