Paratuberculosis

Paratuberculosis is a chronic bacterial disease that affects the digestive system. It primarily affects sheep, goats, and cattle (most commonly dairy cattle).

Symptoms:

Gradual and progressive weight loss.

Increasingly severe diarrhea.

Thickening and inflammation of the intestinal walls.

Muscle atrophy.

Reduced milk production.

There is no approved treatment for Paratuberculosis. Therefore, the following measures should be taken:

Cleaning and disinfecting animal housing areas using 3% formalin.

Adhering to hygienic practices, testing new animals to identify and remove infected cases, and maintaining continuous monitoring of adult animals.

In herds infected with Paratuberculosis: Calves or lambs should be born in areas free of manure. They must be immediately separated from their mothers at birth. They should be fed pasteurized colostrum or certified disease-free colostrum They must remain isolated from adult animals for at least one year to reduce the risk of infection, as this group is most vulnerable.
