Salmonellosis

Salmonellosis is a bacterial disease that affects poultry, causing early mortality in many flocks during the first weeks, with cases of diarrhea, reduced egg production rates, and a decrease in hatchability and fertility in breeder flocks.

Modes of Transmission of Salmonella in Poultry:

Spread of infection among birds through contaminated air by inhaling droplets from infected birds.

Transmission from the hen to the embryo, where the bacteria are passed from infected hens to embryos, causing infection in chicks.

Symptoms:

Swelling of joints, with enlargement of wing or leg joints.

Lethargy and reduced appetite, leading to severe weight loss in birds.

Diarrhea.

Prevention Measures:

Applying biosecurity measures in poultry farms

Conducting microbial testing of the flock and production inputs on a regular basis.

Proper disinfection of hatcheries and incubation facilities, and eliminating rodents, insects, and migratory birds that spread the disease.
