Rabies  

Rabies is a viral disease that affects mammals and impacts the central nervous system. It is a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. ​  

Modes of Transmission in Animals  

Bites from infected “rabid” animals to healthy animals.  

Direct contact between the saliva of infected animals and mucous membranes, such as the eyes, mouth, nose, or open wounds and scratches on the skin.  

Signs of the Disease in Animals:  

There are two forms of rabies: the furious form, characterized by aggression, and the dumb (paralytic) form.

Excessive salivation and inability to swallow.  

Progressive paralysis of the facial muscles, extending to other parts of the body.  

Sources of Rabies Infection:

Transmission of the rabies virus primarily occurs through contamination of bite wounds with the saliva of an infected animal.  

Through contamination of wounds or the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, or eyes with saliva containing the virus.

Disinfect any equipment used in handling animals to prevent disease transmission.
