Glanders is a contagious zoonotic disease that primarily affects equine species, including horses, donkeys, and mules. It is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia mallei, which is present in nasal discharge and ulcerated skin secretions of infected animals. The disease can be transmitted through contaminated food and water.
