Signs of Infestation

Both adult insects and nymphs feed on the sap of fruits, leaves, stems, or branches, secreting honeydew that promotes the growth of black mold. This, along with dust accumulation, interferes with photosynthesis, reducing tree productivity and degrading fruit quality, especially under severe infestation.

Sources of Spread and Transmission

Transfer of infested seedlings and fruits from one place to another.

Contaminated agricultural tools and equipment.

Wind, insects, and birds, particularly ants.

Prevention and Control Mechanism
Proper pruning to expose trees to sunlight and airflow.
Regular inspection of trees for early detection and control of the pest.
Maintaining appropriate planting distance.
Avoiding excessive irrigation to prevent high humidity.
Crushing initial pest colonies mechanically and pressure washing trees with agricultural soap and water to help control the infestation.
In cases of severe mealybug infestation, spraying trees with mineral oils in combination with an approved insecticide, ensuring proper timing, correct dosage, and appropriate application technique. Trees should be thoroughly washed during spraying with sufficient pressure to ensure the solution reaches all parts of the tree.
