Strangles  

Strangles is an acute contagious disease that affects horses. It is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus Equi.  

Symptoms:  

Acute inflammation of the respiratory tract.  

Elevated body temperature.  

Abscess formation in the lymph nodes of the upper respiratory tract.  

Susceptible Animals:  

The disease primarily affects horses, especially foals aged two months and older. It rarely affects horses over five years of age.  

Modes of Transmission:  

Infection may spread through direct contact between infected and healthy horses, or indirectly through contaminated grooming tools and daily care equipment.  

Prevention Measures:  

Avoiding the introduction of new horses unless their health status is confirmed.  

Preventing the spread of infection by isolating infected horses and disinfecting stables.
