In the framework of the Kingdom's efforts to consolidate its leading position in the fields that concern with equestrian sport, equine health, and development of this crucial sector; in consonance with the national heritage and cultural values, Weqaa Center has conducted several quality initiatives that target the development of horse industry in order to enhance its health and sustainability; in coordination with the relevant governmental and private Sides. The most prominent effort is developing " Equine Veterinary Association" including several relevant Sides specialized in the equine health. This Association is considered as a coordinative national platform. It works on unifying efforts and corporate cooperation to face the health challenges that can affect the sustainability of this sector. The Association also seeks to: • Raise the level of equine by ensuring the best use of veterinary pharmaceuticals. • Promote the level of biosecurity in the relevant facilities. • Discuss the health obstacles to be addressed with suitable suggestions and solutions. • Strength the prevention operations for protecting equine from diseases and improve the veterinary services quality.
Additionally, the members of this Association have approved the executive plan that contributes to developing the horse industry in the Kingdom with the aim of: • Promoting the veterinary services efficiency. • Providing the effective veterinary pharmaceuticals. • Organizing the veterinary quarantine procedures to follow up the movement of horses. • Enhancing the scientific researches on equine diseases and raise the awareness of horse's owners and those who work in this field.
Actually, this plan reflects a national commitment to provide a safe and healthy environment for equines through developing the veterinary cadres' skills that support protecting humans, quine wealth, and environment health from risks in accordance with 'One Health Approach'. The Association, so far, has held three meetings. Besides, the technical committee's meeting through which several points have been discussed:
• The challenges that face equine sector and suitable solutions. • The epidemiological situation and study of health status of equines. • The surveillance operations and vaccination programs updating according to the local situation. • Emphasizing that the Kingdom is free of epidemiological diseases. • Developing procedures of biosecurity in accordance with the global standards. • Enhancing the national and private laboratories' roles that support equine health. • The outcomes of workshops related to equine participation in the sport races and events. • The mechanism of transporting horses across regions of the Kingdom and ensuring their health. • The initiative of establishing a national platform for the continuing professional development (CPD) for those who work in the equine fields. • Approval of executive plan for developing horse industry. • The corporate strategy of Equestrian Authority and pinpointing the challenges that face horse industry. • The supporting prominent national initiatives along with the current preparation for Saudi Cup of Horse Racing.
These initiatives are essential axes that embody the national efforts towards preserving the sustainability of equine health and developing horse industry for its importance in the agricultural economy and its deep cultural value which are closely associated with the Saudi identity and national heritage. It is well known that the Kingdom has a prominent position in the field of equestrian regionally and globally. Weqaa Center and the other relevant Sides are devoting all the efforts which support advancement of equine health and provide the best practices and policies to achieve a successful future of equine sustainability.
